World Nurses Week Activities Organised at EMU Department of Nursing

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing organized various events within the scope of the International Nurses Week on Friday, 26 May, 2023, at 10:30 am. The activities, which took place after the opening ceremony of the Champion Angels Amphitheater, commenced with the opening speeches of Prof. Dr. Mehtap Malkoç, the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, and Prof. Dr. Sevinç Taştan, the Chair of the Nursing Department.

"Our Nursing Students are Very Fortunate"

Prof. Dr. Malkoç emphasized the crucial role of nurses in the healthcare team and congratulated all nurses, students, and academicians of the department on the occasion of the International Nurses Week. Prof. Dr. Malkoç noted that the Nursing Department is the strongest department of the Faculty of Health Sciences at EMU in terms of student numbers, academic staff, and laboratory facilities. She reminded the students that they are very fortunate to receive education at world standards at the Nursing Department.

"You Are the Future of My Honorable Profession"

In her speech, Prof. Dr. Taştan started by sharing the history of International Nurses Week with the participants. Prof. Dr. Taştan mentioned that the world has experienced significant traumas such as COVID-19, wars, and earthquakes in recent years, and nurses have been at the forefront, providing healthcare services wherever they are needed. Prof. Dr. Taştan emphasized the necessity of investing in nurses and empowering them to achieve sustainable health goals. She stated that the Nursing Department at EMU continues to grow steadily, aware of its responsibilities, and mentioned that a total of 626 students are enrolled in the department, including 591 undergraduate and 35 postgraduate students. Addressing the students, Prof. Dr. Taştan said, "Dear students, you are the future of my honorable profession, of which I have always been proud to be a member. It is your responsibility to prepare yourselves for the future in the best possible way. This responsibility is also crucial for your participation in decision-making mechanisms related to your profession in the future."

Prof. Dr. Duygulu and Dr. Cevheroğlu Delivered Presentations

Following the speeches, Prof. Dr. Sergül Duygulu delivered a presentation titled "Career Journey in Nursing: Our Opportunities." In her presentation, Prof. Dr. Duygulu discussed career opportunities for nurses in today's world. She also shared examples from her own career development process and goals.

Seda Cevheroğlu

Then, Dr. Seda Cevheroğlu delivered her presentation on the theme of the 2023 International Nurses Council: "Our Nurses: Our Future." Dr. Cevheroğlu addressed the nursing theme set by the International Council of Nurses in her presentation. After their presentations, Prof. Dr. Sergül Duygulu and Dr. Seda Cevheroğlu responded to questions from the students.

Following the event, a charity bazaar was organized by the Faculty of Health Sciences to raise funds for the Champion Angels Association. The said organisation received significant participation and interest from students and academicians.
