Late Turkish Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was commemorated in EMU through a series of organisations which took place on 10 November 2017, the 79th anniversary of his death.
The first ceremony took place with the participation of academic and administrative staff and students in front of EMU Atatürk Monument at 8:45 a.m. A wreath was laid on Atatürk’s monument by Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam. At 09:05, a moment of silence followed by the National Anthem was observed.
Then, the ceremony continued with EMU Atatürk Application and Research Center chair Turgay Bülent Göktürk’s 10th of November Declaration about Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
Rector of EMU Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam also delivered a speech during the ceremony and stated that the Turkish Cypriot community abided by Atatürk’s Principles and Revolutions at all phases of their national struggle. Prof. Dr. Osam added that they all commemorate Mustafa Kemal Atatürk with respect.
The ceremony continued with poems and musical performance of EMU Education Faculty, Fine Arts Education Department, Music Teaching Program students.
Atatürk’s Cyprus Policies Discussed at the Panel
At 10:30 a.m., a panel at EMU Mustafa Afşin Ersoy Conference Hall took place. During the panel EMU Atatürk Research and Application Center Chair Dr. Turgay Bülent Göktürk delivered a presentation titled “Atatürk and Cyprus”. Dr. Turgay Bülent Göktürk provided information about the history of Cyprus and Atatürk’s policies regarding Cyprus. Following Göktürk’s presentation, EMU Atatürk Research and Application Center Executive Board Member and Law Faculty academic staff Prof. Dr. Turgut Turhan delivered a presentation titled “Three Reasons for Atatürk’s Death” and EMU Atatürk Research and Application Center academic staff member Süheyla Göktürk talked about “Atatürk’s Understanding of the Republic. At the end of the panel, a documentary screenin took place.
Photo Exhibition Launched
As part of the ceremonies, an exhibition titled “Atatürk and Atatürk’s Photos in Press in 1938” was launched in collaboration with Mağusa Kale Lions at EMU Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Center at 2:30 p.m. The exhibition features photos of Atatürk and news releases on his death.
