To raise public awareness towards pulmonary health, “Pulmonary Rehabilitation” week is annually observed worldwide in March. Turkish Republic and the Republic of Northern Cyprus Ministries of Health has announced this year’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation Week as 7-13 March. The week highlights the importance of team approach in chronic lung and respiratory problems.
EMU Health Sciences Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Mehtap Malkoç stated that pulmonary rehabilitation elevates the positive effects of the standard medical treatment applied on chronic lung patients.
Prof. Dr. Malkoç also put forth that pulmonary rehabilitation programs are carried out by multidisciplinary teams formed by doctors, physiotherapists, nurses, dietitians, and psychologists. The aim of the said programs is to remove shortness of breath and functional deficiency, to increase the exercising capacity, to inform the patients and families regarding the disease and to provide psychosocial support to get rid of the negative effects brought by the disease.
Eastern Mediterranean University Health Sciences Faculty has started to provide services regarding pulmonary rehabilitation applications. Academic staff members specialised in this field provide the patients exercise and flexing programs. The training of patients and families carries special importance in pulmonary rehabilitation programs. The Faculty’s Nutrition and Dietetics Department also provide nutritional recommendations for the said group of patients.
